Hi, I’m Paula Maree. I’m 39, still single and have spent most of my money on travel! I grew up in a small town in outback Queensland, Australia and always dreamed of travelling the world. Yet somehow, I ended up moving to the city and got stuck in a career-rut. Like many other late-twenty-something single, independent women, I was career-driven; slaving away at my desk for up to 10 hours a day, addicted to coffee and married to my job!
I loved working as a Marketing Manager. It was the defining role in my career and I was lucky enough to be promoted to the position not long after breaking into the fashion industry in my early twenties. It was my dream job and I lived for the challenge!
The role was exciting as I was always working on something new. It entailed juggling a million projects at once and I felt like I was drowning in a never-ending ‘to do’ list. Although, somehow I thrived on the pressure! Developing campaigns and designing creative kept me inspired. Whilst organising launches, photo shoots and special events was all a part of my hectic day-to-day routine. I was constantly checking my emails (with the phone in my other hand) and forever hustling for more press.
Working with a lot of interesting people meant the job was rewarding. Plus, being in the fashion industry had a lot of perks too (What girl doesn’t love free clothes). My role involved working with magazine editors, pitching for editorial coverage, as well as television wardrobe stylists, radio programmers, record labels and musicians. I also met professional athletes, photographers and fashion models, plus the odd celebrity along the way! (And there were a few moments where I had to hold back my inner fangirl, especially when I met my teen idol, Miranda Kerr).
Most importantly, though, the role was a great stepping-stone in launching my international career. Majority of the brands I represented were based in the US, therefore I quickly learnt a lot about international business. At a young age, I was setting the marketing direction for fashion distributors in over 23 countries throughout the world. The role also took me on my first overseas adventure and during the flight my boss made a passing comment, “You’d make a great Flight Attendant!”
Ironically, I was offended at the time! Why would I want to quit my corporate career to pour coffee? But, little did I know, this would become a lifestyle choice that I would love. Approaching my thirties, I jet off on a well-deserved break, after nine years as a slave to the fashion industry. However, when I returned to my desk, I found myself daydreaming of exotic, remote destinations. Suddenly, I realised that I had been bitten by the travel bug!
Within six months I quit my job and moved to Melbourne, after landing a role as a domestic Flight Attendant. Two and a half years later the airline I work for expanded internationally (Read that story here!). And in 2016, I was fortunate to spend my working week living in Bali and this was without a doubt THE BEST YEAR OF MY LIFE! My Flight Attendant journey almost came to end during the coronavirus pandemic. But, in 2021 I landed a role at Virgin Australia and I’m excited that my aviation career has taken off again!
Over the years I’ve fallen in love with travel. The places I’ve visited and the people that I’ve met along the way have all had such a big impact on my life. They will forever hold a special place in my heart.
