Landing a job as a Flight Attendant is so much harder than most people expect. The Flight Attendant recruitment process is one of the most challenging experiences I’ve ever encountered, because it’s so competitive. So here are my top tips to help you get hired!

People constantly ask me if I would consider changing airlines. But it’s not quite as simple as sending in an application, even if you have many years of previous flying experience! And the large number of candidates vying for each position makes this a very coveted – and competitive – career path!

I’ve attended assessments days as an applicant and as an assessor and whilst each airline has a selection criteria that is very specific, the process for Flight Attendant recruitment is usually very similar. If you have worked in hospitality, or a customer service position, this is beneficial should you wish to be considered for an airline role so be sure to highlight this on your CV. Customer service is the key component of the Flight Attendant role and you must also be dedicated to learning and upholding the airlines safety standards whilst remaining professional at all times.

Airlines value selfless people who are warm, friendly and genuinely interested in improving the customer experience. You must be committed to helping others and working as part of a team if you wish to pursue a professional career in aviation.

Most importantly, research the airline’s history, think about why you would like to join their team.Then, if you make it through to the group assessment day, remember that you are being watched from the moment you walk into the room and this your best chance to make a good impression!

– Select conservative corporate attire (A nice blouse, blazer and knee-length pencil skirt paired with stockings and sensible court shoes – not stillettos! – is most appropriate for a professional look).
– Your grooming must be immaculate (wear natural make up, style your hair up in a neat bun and ensure your nails are manicured) and your deportment should also reflect that of a Flight Attendant – stand up straight and smile!
– Be polite to the reception staff and when you enter the assessment room be sure to show that you enjoy mingling with people who will potentially become your work colleagues.
– You must show that you can work effectively as part of a team and will be asked to participate in group activities. Whilst you want to be proactive and contribute, it is equally as important to not be too overbearing. Be yourself and show that you are naturally good at creating positive interpersonal connections and cooperating with others.
– The assessment day will also usually include a written test. If it is in your native language you should find in quite easy, so try not to stress and think logically as you record your answers!
– And finally, you will also be required to participate in an individual one-on-one interview or an interview with a panel of recruiters. Be prepared to answer questions using the STAR format to highlight how your previous experiences make you well suited to the Flight Attendant role.

Remember, it is a highly competitive process as there are lots of candidates applying for a limited number of positions. Please don’t despair if you don’t get selected the first time around. Keep applying and show the airline that you are committed to working on your professional development in order to land the role!

So you saw your dream job advertised. You prepared an amazing application and submitted it to the recruitment team.

Then, you had all of your fingers (and toes) crossed. And you were quietly confident that you would make it through to the next round (which for Flight Attendant recruitment normally involves an online video interview or personality quiz) and then an invitation to attend a recruitment assessment day! Then, to your despair, the rejection email lands in your inbox. Or worse still, your don’t receive a response at all and are forever left wondering, What if…?

The heartbreak of not landing your dream job is devastating at first. You put your heart and soul on the line and wonder why on earth the recruitment team couldn’t see that!

It’s happened to all of us at one point. And truth be told, you may have been perfect for the role but that simply didn’t come across on the day. But, I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason! So perhaps fate just has a different path for you. And you’ll never know how exciting that journey may be until it unfolds. So, please, don’t despair. Take a moment to review your recruitment application and interview skills and take note of areas where you could improve. Then, pick yourself up, get back out there and trust that something amazing is just around the corner!

Tailor your recruitment application to each role you are applying for and don’t give up on your dream!


1. If appropriate, follow up on the missed opportunity. If you made it through the final interview round, it is worthwhile to let the recruiter know if you are still interested in the role. That way you could be considered should another opening arise in the future. Or, if the opening was an internal promotion, you may benefit from requesting feedback on how you can continue to develop your professional skills.

2. Take a moment to review your application and re-evaluate your career goals. Think about how you could improve your next application and assess if you need to modify your approach. Then, take a moment to re-think what you are looking to achieve. Are you still on the correct path to achieve your dream role?

3. Get back on the bandwagon and put yourself out there again! Don’t let a missed opportunity leave you stuck in a dead-end job. Look at other options and think about what you need to do to keep progressing in your career. Keep an eye on the job market and trust that the right opportunity is just around the corner. Keeping a positive perspective is key to the attracting the success you are hoping to achieve!
